Creating a Traditional Home with Vertical Shiplap Panelling

New build apartments are fresh, and full of possibilities! Until you re-paint, or decorate, often they feel impersonal, so they really need that extra level of attention, to make it feel put together, and like you, like home.
I love panelling, and played with so many different ideas for this living room. Every time, I circled back to vertical shiplap panelling for this wall. I love that it’s a traditional look, with a nod to rural homes. It also feels much more versatile to me than the old tongue-and-groove panels, which rather lends itself specifically to cottage style. Vertical shiplap adds timeless texture and character to a space. It makes for an elegant backdrop to a traditional style, whilst feeling fresh.
We measured, and had MDF cut into custom strips to fit the wall. They were installed by a professional, who took care that they would be securely and safely mounted. Then, we primed the MDF strips with a Dulux Trade primer. It’s quite sticky, so I found it took a lot more effort to roll on, than I’d expected! Then we used Dulux Heritage in Flax Seed in Velvet Matte. Compared to the primer, this paint just slid onto the wall, with great coverage.
To create a cosy, nurturing space, we chose a to paint the panels with a heritage paint called Flax Seed, which creates a lovely warming effect. It’s a lovely soft beige, which reads as a warm white in this space.
Now, I find the space a lot more welcoming and relaxing, than when it was simply a flat, blank wall. The overall effect is cosy, comfortable, and fresh!
