Subdued and Surprising Spilliaert Palettes

Not only does Belgian artist Léon Spilliaert paint mystical and moody works, playing with contrast and darkness, but his colour palettes are varied. From surprising and refreshing to classic North Sea shades, his colour selection is worth considering.

I discovered turn-of-the-century Belgian artist Léon Spilliaert, at the Royal Academy. Here are a few of colour palettes I plucked out of works I noticed at the exhibit.

Take a look at his electrifying use of bold punches of colour set against deep tones and subtle greys.

These soft seaside hues of blues, greens, and browns feels just like a grey day by the North Sea coast.
