Scandi Forest Home: Space Planning

Before choosing furniture or decoration, it’s essential in a project to consider space planning. For my Scandi Forest Home project, I considered the essential functions of the space, the flow, sight lines, as well as how to organise and zone the space.

As this is a social, family house, I wanted to make sure that the living room, where everyone could gather for pre-dinner snacks, or where the adults could gather and chat after dinner, would have enough seating space for lots of people. I also need to make sure that the seated people could hear each other! The closer the seating, the easier it is for conversation to flow. Shouting across a massive space, just to talk to the person across you, is not exactly ideal. Here below, I’ve marked with yellow arrows good distances for conversation.

For the TV room, I wanted to make sure to zone the space, to get the most out of it. There’s a big sofa for gathering together to watch movies, and then there’s a table area for the kids to draw or do homework in the future.

Here’s a 3D preview of how the space could feel, looking from the living room to the dining room. In the dining room, I included lots of storage, and again, lots of seating for all those meals with friends and relatives!
